Why ITIL 4 is important?
ITIL 4 is not just the next version, this ITIL update is the first major update to ITIL since 2007. This update specifies ITIL as "a framework for service management" as against the "IT service management" which reflects the trend of applying service management best practices in the domain of enterprise and business services.

In simple words, ITIL 4 is launched to focus on 'end-to-end service management from demand to value.’ It is a community-driven update and has integrated Agile, DevOps and Lean concepts with ITIL best practices. Thus helping professionals to compete in the growing and complex market.
What are the differences between ITIL V3 and ITIL 4?
ITIL 4 is not a replacement for the existing ideas of the service management but an addition to the ITIL framework. Both the ITIL V3 and ITIL 4 are built on the same guiding principles but ITIL 4 has taken a new approach.

ITIL 4
  • ITIL 4 does not have the concept of a service life cycle but has 2 important components:

  1. 4 dimensions  (Organizations and people, Information and Technology, Partners and suppliers, Value streams and processes.)
  2. Service Value system (Guiding Principles, Governance, Service value chain, Continual improvement, Practices.)

The processes are replaced by 34 practices but many practices correspond to ITIL v3 processes.

  • ITIL 4 framework is a framework for Service Management

  • ITIL 4 integrates with other frameworks and methodologies like Agile, DevOps and Lean

ITIL V3

  • ITIL V3 is based on the ITIL service lifecycle that is divided into 5 components (Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation, Continual Service Improvement) and has a detailed description of 26 ITIL processes.

  • ITIL V3 focuses on IT Service Management

  • ITIL V3 does not integrate with other frameworks

When do I get my certification?
Participants who have successfully cleared the certification exam will get to know their scores within 7 business days from the date of taking up the exam. The ITIL® foundation certificate will be sent across to successful participants by mail/courier after approximately 2 weeks of taking up the exam.
What is the learner profile for the ITIL 4 Foundation certification
This course is suitable for individuals in the IT profession and business students who intend to kickstart service management careers. To broadly categorize:

  • ITSM professionals or aspiring ITSM professionals.
  • IT professionals (digital, product, developers) who are involved in service delivery.
  • Existing ITIL qualification holders who wish to upgrade the knowledge.
What does the certification exam entail?
On successful completion of the training, participants can schedule their ITIL 4 exam by using the exam voucher. The exam is conducted by PEOPLECERT, and the certification is maintained by them. The exam is a closed book and has a rigorous assessment process. Participants need to achieve a minimum pass percentage (65% for ITIL 4 Foundation) to be certified.

Exam details:

  • Number of questions: 40
  • Duration: 1 hour (60 minutes)
  • Exam format: Objective Test Questions (OTQs)
  • Passing Score: 65% ( 26 out of 40 questions)

If a candidate is taking the exam in a non-native or working language, they may be awarded 25% extra time ( i.e., 75 minutes in total)
What are the prerequisites for the ITIL 4 Foundation certification training & exam?
There are no mandatory prerequisites to attend the training or ITIL 4 Foundation exam. A basic understanding of Service Management concepts is helpful.

ITIL 4 Foundations certification is in itself a prerequisite for other levels in the ITIL 4 certification scheme.
When are the ITIL 4 Certifications scheduled to be launched?
The ITIL 4 Foundation has been launched on 28th February 2019. The other levels are scheduled as per the below timelines.

  • ITIL 4 Managing Professional Transition Module - 3 October 2019.
  • ITIL 4 Managing Professional Modules (ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support, and ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve) - November 2019
  • ITIL 4 Managing Professional Modules (ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value, ITIL 4 Specialist: High Velocity IT) - Q1 2020
  • ITIL 4 Strategic Leader Module - more information to be released in the second half of 2019.
What are the changes to the ITIL Certification scheme?
The ITIL 4 Certification scheme has 5 levels. 
  • ITIL Foundation
  • ITIL Specialist (3 Modules), 
  • ITIL Strategist, 
  • ITIL Leader, and
  • ITIL Master.
There are two designation streams under ITIL 4 that one can follow. ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) and ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL). One can choose the desired designation based on his learning and career plan.

I have accumulated some credits in the ITIL V3 certification scheme, so how can I switch to ITIL 4?
If you have already accumulated 17 credits in the ITIL V3 certification scheme, then you are eligible to take the ITIL Managing Professional Transition Module that will help you to change to ITIL 4 certification scheme.

If you do not have 17 credits, then you can continue in the V3 certification scheme until you accumulate your 17 credits or start fresh from the ITIL 4 Foundation course.

I have finished my ITIL V3 Foundation course, should I re-register for the ITIL 4 Foundation exam?
If you have only completed your ITIL v3 Foundation course, it is recommended that you take up an ITIL 4 Foundation course. This ensures a smooth transition to the new certification scheme and also, there are a lot of new focus areas and materials in ITIL 4 which is assessed in the new ITIL 4 exam.

Will ITIL V3 be still relevant?
If you have started your journey in ITIL V3, do not worry if your certifications will become obsolete. ITIL V3 continues as a credible IT certification, and the exams are available until a further announcement from AXELOS. It is expected that ITIL V3 will be relevant until mid-June 2020.
Is ITIL 4 Foundation course mandatory?
The ITIL 4 Foundation level is designed as an introduction to ITIL 4 and enables candidates to look at IT service management through a BRAND NEW end-to-end operating model for the creation, delivery and continual improvement of tech-enabled products and services. Once you have passed your Foundation exam, you become eligible for all the other ITIL courses.
